Who could resist these caramel favorites.!

Originally created by the famous poultry breeder 'William Cook' from Orpington, Kent.
Cook introduced the Buff Orpington duck to the United States in 1908 at a Madison Square Garden Show in New York City.
In 1914, the breed was admitted into the American Standard of Perfection under the name “Buff”  [which is unusual since in no other instance is a color used as a breed name].

The Buff Orpington duck is of medium-weight @ 7 to 8 lbs.. which has much to offer the breeder who is looking for an attractive, dual-purpose bird. It is a good layer, typically laying about 150 - 220 eggs per year and usually gains weight relatively rapidly, making it ready for market @ approx 12 weeks of age when kept in ideal conditions.

Best kept in groups of 4 - 6 or more plus. . .

We have found them to be an excellent productive med-large size duck, which have the easy to keep advantage of being kept flightless and which also look great on anyone's pond or grassy paddock!

Both excellent layers of large size eggs and very protective mothers and who could deny, they are a very pretty duck to have around. .
Great to have in your garden as they will eat all the slugs and bugs but not your plants, ducks do not dig the ground up and make holes and eat your plants like chickens do. .

These are our very favorite breed of duck. . We have kept other breeds of ducks here [such as Peking, Magpie & Swedish blue] but always come back to these lovely palomino coloured ducks, which are very rarely found and it has been extremely hard to source good large size stock... although over the years we have found our ducks have improved in leaps & bounds and we are now very happy with our breeding flock of birds, which are very popular with everyone that see's them here.

If you have at least 2 breeding pair, or more together, it will give each other far more protection as a group from predators etc, plus if a female is sitting then the drake/s will not be so lonely on his own, and Yes they will all get along as a group.!

Raising newly hatched Ducklings;

You will need to keep newly hatched ducklings warm and dry for approx 3 weeks or more ( depending on the time of year, i.e. longer in the winter time) with only a small shallow dish of water for drinking only, (not for swimming) then they can be put outside in a warm dry house (if weather is warm enough) with a shallow water source for swimming and drinking, i.e. an old frying pan or shallow plastic container.
Please Note the warnings below:
Do not give baby ducklings any water for swimming until they are much older (once feathered up) only shallow drinking water to start with.
Ducks & ducklings can not jump out of a bath tub full of water they will get tired and drown. . We recommend using a child's padding pool or similar with some bricks as steps, on both the inside & outside so they can climb out, unless you have a natural gradual depth water way. .
